Tyler City Council amends city code to clarify Tyler Water Utilities customers' responsibilities during leaks

The amendment defines obligations of customers with the goal of ensuring customers are fully informed about the steps they need to take to address water leaks.

TYLER, Texas — The Tyler City Council approved changes to the Tyler City Code, clarifying Tyler Water Utilities customers' responsibilities regarding water leaks Wednesday.

The amendment defines obligations of customers in the event of visible water leaks, water misuse, plumbing issues related to the consumer side of the meter and unusually high water consumption reflected on water bills, with the goal of ensuring customers are fully informed about their obligations and steps they need to take to address any leaks on their property.

Additionally, the amendment introduced a provision for consumers applying for leakage credits. The amendment applies to situations where water loss happens due to an unknown or concealed leak, which is defined as a leak that generally occurs underground, inside a wall or in other hidden locations that make it difficult to notice without disturbing the property.

Eligibility for leakage credit is restricted to customers who experience no more than one qualifying leak per 12-month period for an account. To be eligible, customers must have no less than three billing cycles of usage history on their account at the affected address at the time of the leak.
