City of Tyler authorizes application for funding to renovate and develop two parks along Legacy Trail

Stewart Park will be the first park since September 2004 nearly 20 years ago to be introduced to the city of Tyler.

TYLER, Texas — Tyler City Council authorized the filing of an application for a Local Parks Grant to develop Stewart Park and W.E. Winters Park on Wednesday.

The city announced the authorization for this grant application from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in a press release Friday. Stewart Park will be the first park since September 2004 nearly 20 years ago to be introduced to the city of Tyler. The application, if approved, would grant $500,00 worth of grants for the development of Stewart park through a matching grant program.

T.B and Gladys Stewart donated nine acres alongside Frankston Highway for the development of the park in 2012. The donation included the Stewart home, built by T.B Stewart from scratch. The city plans to salvage parts of the home to create a pavilion and a historical marker.

The property's master plan includes becoming a trailhead for the second phase of Legacy Trail, which was funded through a grant from the Texas Department of Transportation.

In addition to the development of Stewart Park, the city also authorized the application for $69,995.89 for W.E Winters Park to fund the purchase of new playground equipment, including a nature-themed steel playground, stepping boulders, a nature bark log tunnel and several other surfaces.
