'RAY OF SUNSHINE:' New Diana High School mourns loss of student

Those who know her say she was a special person who touched the lives of many at New Diana.

NEW DIANA, Texas — On Thursday, community members within New Diana ISD were continuing to mourn the loss of Amy Marzona, a high school student known for her positive energy.

Those who know her say she was a special person and student who touched the lives of many there.

"She was one of those kids that always had a smile on her face. I always saw come in with a smile and you knew she had something funny or uplifting to share. That’s the thing I remember most about her, she always had a little slight tease, or a joke, or something funny to tell you," New Diana High School Principal Shane Wright said.

Marzona was an incoming junior, involved in several organizations and someone who never shied away from asking tough questions.

"She was the model band student, the kid everyone wanted to be part of their group, or student everybody wanted.  She was faithful to her duties, as a band member and majorette. She's just the kid everybody wanted to be participating,” Wright said.

ON Wednesday, she experienced a medical emergency while at majorette practice and was rushed to the hospital where she later passed.

The next day, students and staff at New Diana High School are trying to recover from the news of her passing.

“When you lose a student, it’s like losing a family member," Wright said.

Those who knew Marzona best say she represented New Diana High School as an ideal student and leader. She was always one of the first people at practice and one of the last to leave. She had a work ethic like no other.

”She’d get to school for the 8 a.m. rehearsal at 7:30 a.m. and already be there waiting. She was so dedicated. She’d be here before me and greet me every morning with that smile," Band Director Gary Fort said.

Fort described what he will miss most of Marzona; "seeing her everyday, her personality, and her smiling face."

If anyone was ever having a bad day, they could always count on Marzona to change that.

"If I had to describe her, I'd say, a ray of sunshine on a cloudy day," Wright said.

Community members and the New Diana Band Boosters have set up a fund to cover funeral expenses.

A visitation will be at the New Diana High School auditorium Sunday, July 14 from 2 to 6 p.m. Funeral services will be on Monday, July 15 at 11 a.m.
