Orthopedic surgeon breaks down realities of DeMarvion Overshown's injury

The injury could see Overshown out for upwards of a year.

TYLER, Texas — ACL tears are always devastating to an athlete, but the injury DeMarvion Overshown sustained is on another level.

“Honestly that that really lines itself more to the car accident, the amount of trauma that that knee felt,” orthopedic surgeon Dr. Azael Arizpe told CBS19. "I think this is more than likely about a year recovery process after surgery, and it all depends on the rehab."

This is the second time Overshown has sustained such an injury. In his first year with the Cowboys, he left the season early due to an ACL tear in his left knee. Now, he faces an ACL, MCL and PCL tear.

The road to recovery starts at surgery, but the majority of the healing is in the rehabilitation process, which starts all the way back at step one.

“So the one thing for him is the stability of the knee, and so because three of the ligaments were injured, first things first is walking," Arizpe said. "So our first goal will be to get full motion and to get him walking."

Rehab is both e physical and mental strain. It can come with athletes not only learning to walk again, but learning to trust their body.

“The mental aspect of this is actually one of the biggest parts of it. In fact, what the research shows is that people who believe in the rehab process and really, really mentally are able to grasp on what they want, where they want to be and how they want to get there, are the ones that do the best” Arizpe said.

Overshown's mother confirmed the surgery will be taking place in the coming days, and he will be moving along the best track possible to see the field as soon as he can.
