KILGORE, Texas — On Friday, Kilgore College had four basketball players sign to the next level.
Kaleb Pouncy signed to Louisiana State-Alexandria, Peter McKey signed to Valdosta State University, Jamil Mutilib signed to Appalachian State, and Willie Williams is headed to Northwestern University.
"Essentially, as coaches, you know, obviously we love the game", Kilgore College head coach Coach Byrd said. "But signing day and our guys being able to get their degree, and have the opportunity to continue to play the sport that they love, and continue to get their bachelor's degree, you know, it just essentially puts everything into perspective. And this is what it's all about."
Playing at a junior college level is not for the weak. It is a lot of hard work and long days.
"Our kids, they're battle tested, playing JUCO basketball, it isn't easy," Byrd said. "You have to have a true passion for the game. You have to have a true passion for academics to be successful and essentially make it out of JUCO. And nine times out of 10 our guys are going to be prepared and ready. They're going to come in and they're going to be ready to help help universities on the court. But also in the classroom as well."
Kilgore College has set the standard for the these athletes as they choose their next university.
"I chose App State because I want to get similar from them what I got from Kilgore," Mutilib said. "So when I got to App State, I felt like I was at home. It was a good position at a high level of basketball, plus the player development over there is everything you want as a college basketball player. "
Williams said he felt the love from the Northwestern coaching staff.
"They were just here every chance they got and they reached out to me the most. I feel great. I'm excited for this opportunity is this new chapter in my life and I'm very excited," Williams said.
