TIMPSON, Texas — Deep East Texas saw most of the impact with Tropical Storm Beryl on Monday. The storm caused significant flooding and property damage across East Texas from roads underwater to the roof of a city hall blown away.
In places like Kilgore, some roads appeared to turn into creeks. Officials urged residents to stay home and reminded people when driving in rainy conditions it's best to turn around, don't drown.
Vehicles of all sizes braved the flooded roadways in Kilgore time and time again. Down on County Road 283 in Rusk County, water was near the top of a bridge as a creek flowed over its banks, making the road impassable.
Over in Shelby County, the city of Timpson is working on cleaning up after a tornado warned storm caused damage near downtown. Wind ripped the roof of its City Hall.
"The Department of Emergency Management and Larry Barnes are assessing right now. We have roof damage. They have ceiling tiles coming out, lines down. So yeah, just a lot of water on the ground. It's a mess," Timpson Mayor Debra Smith said.
Strong winds behind Beryl caused ceiling tiles at the roofless City Hall to fall. Most of the city is still without power.
"Even if Deep East Texas (Electric Cooperative) gets power to our grid we can’t get ours on because we have several cross beams and transformers down and lines down," she said.
