HAWKINS, Texas — An effort to restore an East Texas veterans’ memorial featuring a vintage helicopter is taking off.
Members of the nonprofit Greater Hawkins Veterans Memorial Association are making several upgrades to the memorial park at 500 Beulah St. that they hope to have completed by Memorial Day. They’re also hosting a golf tournament in early June to help pay for upgrades to the park.
The memorial was built in 2000, but parts of it — including the AH-1 Armed Attack Helicopter that is mounted on a pole in the park’s pond — have fallen into disrepair, said Steve Higdon, president of the association.
