LUFKIN, Texas — A Lufkin High School senior was honored last week for his appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point.
U.S. Congressmen Pete Sessions, who represents parts of East and Central Texas in Congress, acknowledged LHS senior Elias Moore on Thursday, April 4, with a special ceremony, including family, friends, students, Lufkin ISD staff, school board members and congressional dignitaries.
Moore plans to study economics and aviation during his four years at the academy. His studies will then be followed by eight years of military service. He will report to West Point in New York on July 1.
According to the academy's website, West Point is the nation's first military academy. The institution prepares young men and women to become officers in the U.S. Army. Cadets study at the academy for four years, graduate with a bachelor of science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant.
Lufkin ISD said Sessions gave his heartfelt congratulations to Moore and talked about a former classmate who received a similar honor during their senior year. He also encouraged underclassmen to consider following Moore's path and look into opportunities four U.S. service academies.
Moore said his father taught him to work hard. He thanked his mentors and role models who guided him in life.
