Texas Rangers investigating after Hunt County Jail inmate dies

HUNT COUNTY, Texas — An investigation is underway after a Hunt County Jail inmate died on Saturday.

According to the Hunt County Sheriff's Office, around 11:15 a.m., detention officers were notified of an inmate in distress within the Hunt County Detention Center.

According to the HCSO, officials immediately checked the condition of the inmate, identified as Gary Lynch, III, 32, of Lone Oak, and determined he was having a medical emergency. Officers then notified EMS and began life-saving actions.

Lynch was in jail on a charge of assault against a public servant with a deadly weapon.

The inmate was taken to a Hunt County hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. 

Next of kin of the deceased was notified and Justice of the Peace Wayne Money performed the inquest and ordered an autopsy.

The Texas Rangers are conducting an investigation into Lynch’s death.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the family in this very difficult time first and foremost," said Sheriff Randy Meeks. "I am confident that the Texas Rangers will conduct a complete and thorough investigation into this case and they have our full cooperation”
