Firefighters working to put massive grass fire in Smith Co.

SMITH COUNTY — Smith County firefighters are working to put out a large grass fire near Winona.

The fire started at about noon at the 21600 block of County Road 3103, near US 271.

According to the Smith County Fire Marshal, a man on the property was mowing grass when something in the tractor shorted out and sparked.

The fire quickly spread to a size of 20 acres.

Firefighters from several area departments responded including Smith County, Red Springs, Winona, Jackson Heights, Sabine, Bullard, Dixie and Gladewater.

The Fire Marshal's Office, Texas Forest Service and Red Cross also responded to assist.
