Official: Cause of Van Zandt County fire undetermined, burned about 1,000 acres

The Van Zandt County area continues to be in a fire danger with extreme conditions that fire can begin and rapidly spread.

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — 8:14 PM: According to Van Zandt County Fire Marshal, the cause of fire is undetermined but most likely started from a discarded cigarette or sparks from a vehicle dragging something like trailer chains.

An estimated 1,000 acres have burned today in Van Zandt County, said Van Zandt County Fire Marshal.

The Van Zandt County area continues to be in a fire danger with extreme conditions that fire can begin and rapidly spread.

7:24 PM: According to Van Zandt Emergency Management Coordinator Vicki McAlister, there were two fires in Van Zandt County which have been contained. Residents can head back to their homes.

There was only one evacuation on County Rd. 2602 and FM 47 which is located between State Highway 243 and I20.

According to the Van Fire Department, there are multiple large fires in the Van Zandt County area.

List of the areas affected by the fires are Van Zandt County Road 1518, Interstate 20 around 523 MM, and Highway 80 near the Kaufman County Line. 

Multiple agencies are at the scene of fires spreading over 100+ acres. Traffic in the area is affected by the fire's smoke.

Officials say to be aware of emergency traffic throughout the county as mutual aid departments arrive to assist the fires.
