TEXAS, USA — As temperatures drop below freezing, TxDOT and local law enforcements are working together to get the roads ready for the winter weather.
TxDOT was out treating icy areas on the roads this morning and pre-treating the main thoroughfares ahead of more ice tonight. Officials are warning drivers to use extra caution on bridges and overpasses.
"We began treating those with some brine solution, something that will help the ice from forming so quickly, we also put some granular materials down to help traction," said Jeff Williford form TxDOT.
Authorities recommend to stay off the roads if at all possible. But if you do have to travel, there are some steps you can take to prepare your car in advance.
"Making sure we have anti-freeze and good tire pressure," said Adam Albritton from the Department of Public Safety.
And if you are driving, TxDOT recommends to watch your speed, drive slowly, and keep distance between you and other cars. If you see TxDOT crews out treating the roads, give them plenty of space. TxDOT has opened their emergency response center in Tyler and have transitioned their crews to a 24- hour work shift.
Officials said the best thing you can do to ensure your safety during this severe winter weather is to stay home.
