GILMER, Texas — Following 3 reported tornadoes through Upshur County, the Miller’s home in Gilmer is nearly unrecognizable.
The Millers went into their bathroom to hide, closed the door and listened while their home was torn to shreds.
“I just started walking across here. And I could hear a blowing sound. And so I went and got my wife,” Coy Miller remembered.
As he stood in what used to be his living room, CBS19 asked what emotions he felt.
“Thankfulness that we survived, being blessed, because so many people helped," Miller said.
The day after the storm, nearly 50 of his neighbors showed up to help him pick up pieces of his home and belongings.
Down the road in Gilmer, family friend Jacob Knight’s seafood restaurant survived.
To pay it forward, he’s offering free food to anyone trying to recover.
“We're going to cook food. I mean, we're gonna make sure. We don't want nobody going hungry,” Knight said.
He said three things make this possible: generous donors, an unwavering community, and faith.
“This is a small town everybody loves each other looks out for each other. Everybody can rebuild. God only gave us one life,” Knight said.
