LUFKIN, Texas — Video posted by the Lufkin Police Department shows cars driving on a flooded Loop 287 in Lufkin under the Tulane Drive underpass.
In anticipation of the heavy rainfall, the Texas Division of Emergency Management had resources on standby for any water rescues.
"Texas A&M Task Force 1 has swift water boat squads available, and the Texas Department of Public Safety has its tactical marine unit and helicopters that are deployed," Wes Rapaport, spokesperson with the Texas Division of Emergency Management, said.
Many roads in Nacogdoches, Angelina, San Augustine, Cherokee and Rusk counties are closed because of overflowing creeks or rivers.
In Nacogdoches, Banita Creek, which flooded over its banks in May 2022, remained at bay as strong currents going under the Pilar Road bridge.
Upstream, Lanana creek looked the same as Banita Creek. Water roared downstream over the College Street bridge near the campus of SFA.
"Know your risk (and know) where your property is in relation to where any flooding may happen," Rapaport said.
As East Texas sees more rain in the coming days this week, make sure to take those precautions if you’re out driving. You can see a full list of road conditions in East Texas here.
