It's officially time to 'fall back' an hour as daylight saving time ends

It's officially time for us to fall back one hour.

TYLER, Texas — It's officially time for us to "fall back" an hour.

Daylight saving time comes to an end Sunday, Nov. 3 at 2 a.m., meaning that people will be gaining an extra hour of sleep.  However, that means sunset comes an hour early. On the first day of our return to standard time, sunset will come just before 5:30 p.m.

Daylight saving time was first introduced to the U.S. during World War I. According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the time change was implemented in an effort to reduce energy costs.  As the war ended, the time change was repealed and the nation returned to standard time.  The idea returned during World War II in an effort to conserve fuel.  However, the national time change was repealed after the war came to a close.

National daylight saving time was re-established in 1966 during the Uniform Time Act.  However, several efforts have been made to make daylight saving time permanent.  That means people would not change their clocks.

Fast forward to the present, and several "Sunshine Protection Acts" have been introduced to the Senate. Most recently, the Sunshine Protection Act of 2023 was introduced in March of last year.  However, all of these bills have stalled in the Senate or the House before becoming law.

So, for now, as Cher says, many Americans are going to "turn back time" this weekend. Unless, of course, they live in Hawaii or Arizona. Both states, with the exception of the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona, do not observe daylight saving time.
