What is a 'fish storm'? CBS19's Savannah Hale explains!

If you've ever heard a meteorologist call a storm a 'fish storm' and wondered what that meant, let me explain!

TYLER, Texas — The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was forecasted to have above average activity, with a predicted 17-25 named storms. Of those storms, between 8-13 were forecast to become hurricanes, and 4-7 to become major hurricanes (Category 3 or higher).

The season began on June 1, hit its peak on September 10, and will officially end on November 30. It's likely that you've heard of the biggest storms that caused the greatest impacts such as Hurricane Beryl, Francine and Helene. But did you know we have already had 11 named storms this season?

If you're wondering how you may have missed them, the answer is pretty simple; many times, named storms don't reach hurricane strength and some never make landfall. In this case, they are often called "fish storms."

A fish storm is a name for a tropical storm or hurricane that runs its entire course out at sea, never making direct impacts to land, and is said to only make impacts to the fish. Even though the storm never makes landfall, they actually can still have impacts to surrounding coasts. A storm a sea can produce strong winds and heavy rain, affecting boats and even producing high surf on coastlines nearby.

While Hurricane Helene made landfall as a category 4 storm and bringing devastating destruction to many states, did you know that there were more storms being named in the Atlantic? Since Helene, we have had Hurricane Isaac, a category 2, as well as Tropical storm Joyce. Both were Fish storms and hand no direct impacts on land.
