Gladewater man narrowly escapes being ejected from home by uprooted tree

The homeowner's step-son says the man has been shaken up, but is otherwise okay

GLADEWATER, Texas — Intense storms Tuesday night brought a plethora of destruction around East Texas with residents across several counties beginning the clean up process Wednesday.

In Gladewater, the damage wasn't as extensive when compared to areas in Smith County where several accounts of downed wires, large trees, and twisted telephone poles were reported around the Azalea district.

However, the tight-knit residential area of Primrose Lane was left in shambles following destructive winds Tuesday night.

Todd Lockwood received the call shortly before midnight that his stepfather needed help right away.

"He was actually right here in this front room when the tree fell over."

In that front room, a couch less than two feet away is where his stepfather Joe sat as a tree underneath the mobile home became uprooted, lifting the property into the air.

"It fell over and buckled the house" said Lockwood.

Besides being shaken up, Lockwood said his stepfather is doing fine but the costs will be extensive.

"All he’s got is his social security", explained Lockwood. "Hopefully we're going to set up some kind of fund to help him out."

With neighboring properties untouched, another mobile home being used for storage was left roofless, with part of it thrown into the adjacent yard.
