Southwest delays over 800 flights, over 150 canceled during Spring Break travel

845 Southwest flights have been delayed and 159 have been canceled across the country, according to FlightAware.

INDIANAPOLIS — Long lines, worried faces and disappointment, that's how some travelers started their vacation at the Southwest ticket counter.

Southwest Airlines is was hit with a wave of delays and cancellations during the beginning of Spring Break travel Saturday.

Around 21% of the company's flights across the nation were delayed and 3% were canceled on March 9, according to FlightAware.

A representative with Southwest Airlines shared this message with 13News:

"Thunderstorms in the Southeast are impacting our operation, and we apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate our Customers’ patience while we work to get them safely to their destinations."

At the Indianapolis International Airport, 38 Southwest flights were delayed and eight were canceled, according to FlightAware.

"We were headed to Costa Rica on a family trip to the jungle. We were going to take an airplane through Houston, but we got delayed several hours and we are going to miss our connection flight," said Patrick Barrett, a traveler.

The only thing between another family at the airport and the sunny beach in Florida was a four-hour delay.

"It may cut into a little beer drinking for me. Hopefully not. Hopefully we still have time for that. Sunny days tomorrow and more days ahead," said Kevin Wettschurack, another traveler.

While they waited for their planes to get off the ground, some travelers made the best of their time.

"We live in a small town where there's not good tacos. Now we are in Indy we are going to get tacos and hang out for a little bit. Then we will go back home and come back tomorrow morning," Barrett said.
