Traffic to be switched to new frontage road on US 59 in Nacogdoches

Beginning Thursday, Jan. 4, crews will direct a traffic switch on U.S. Route 59 and State Highway Loop 224 to a new frontage road.

NACOGDOCHES, Texas — Crews are planning to switch traffic onto a newly constructed frontage road in Nacogdoches Thursday.

According to the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office, construction crews are set to direct a traffic switch on U.S. Route 59 and State Highway Loop 224 to a new frontage road beginning on Thursday, Jan. 4.

As part of a major Nacogdoches construction project, crews will switch traffic to the new northbound frontage road on US 59/SL 224 located within the US 59/SL 224 South Interchange construction project, NCSO said.

A detour will be placed at the State Highway 7 exit ramp. There will be message boards reminding drivers of the traffic switch and detour, NCSO said.

Officers will be monitoring and directing traffic as the new frontage road opens. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and obey all traffic laws.

“There are many moving parts to this major construction project. We urge the public to be very alert and slow down as they maneuver through this work zone," said Rhonda Oaks, spokesperson of the Texas Department of Transportation.

The US 59/SL 224 South Interchange construction will upgrade the existing US 59 to interstate standards by constructing new US 59 direct connectors at SL 224 and frontage roads along SL 224 between SH 7 and US 59 South.

The construction project began in September 2019 and is currently 77% completed. The project is scheduled to be completed by mid-2025.

Crews are working to connect the new infrastructure to existing roadways throughout the project. Currently, crews are drilling bridge foundations at Spradley Street, installing new drainage features for the US 59 southbound frontage road, and beginning work at SH 7 to rebuild the intersection.
