TYLER, Texas — EDITOR'S NOTE: The video above aired on Dec. 2022.
The Tyler Police Department is planning to increase patrols throughout the city this holiday season.
Beginning Saturday, Dec. 16 to Tuesday, Jan. 2, the presence of law enforcement will be increased across the city of Tyler.
TPD said officers will focus on meter speeding, seatbelt violations, running red lights, texting, and driving while intoxicated.
“We will have additional officers on the road during the holiday weekend specifically to enforce traffic laws. This deters drinking and driving, speeding, and distracted driving. It also increases public safety and keeps Tyler residents and visitors safer while attending New Year’s events and festivities," said Jimmy Toler, Tyler Police Department Chief.
TPD urges drivers if they are going to drink alcohol this holiday season, to not get behind the wheel and instead find an alternative way to get home safely. Several alternative options are listed below:
- Designate a sober driver
- Use a rideshare service or taxi
- Call a friend or family member
- Use public transportation
The Texas Department of Transportation gave TPD a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEPS) grant pays for overtime for officers as they enforce traffic during a busy period of the year by reducing fatalities, accidents, and injuries in Tyler.
TPD wants to remind drivers a DWI can cost up to $17,000 in fines and fees and lead to jail time, loss of a driver’s license, difficulty finding or keeping a job, loss of trust from loved ones and a lifetime of regret.
If you see suspicious activity on the roads, contact the Tyler Police Department at 903-531-1000 or call 911.
