OFFICIAL: Bicyclist dead after crash on US 69 in Cherokee County

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling north on US Highway 69 when it hit a bicyclist traveling on the same road.

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Texas — One person is dead after a two-vehicle crash in Cherokee County early Saturday morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, a 2004 Chevrolet Tahoe was traveling north on US Highway 69 when it hit a bicyclist traveling on the same road just four miles north of Jacksonville. 

Officials identified the driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe as Melanie Renee Reyes, 36. Reyes did not suffer any injuries.

The bicyclist was identified as Derrick Wayne Steele, 49. Officials said Steele was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials said the investigation is ongoing and there is no additional information at this time.
