WHITEHOUSE, Texas — A city 550 miles away from Kansas City, Missouri is decking their halls with t-shirts, flowers and anything Kansas City Chiefs themed in honor of its brightest star.
"We're a small town community. We support each other. We love each other, resident Suzanne Weckman said.
Over the years, the city has seen Mahomes rise from high school prospect to a household name.
"I think the community is overwhelmingly excited to see one of their own move forward and do great things," Mayor Charles Parker said.
Mahomes is arguably the athlete of the year, putting his hometown of Whitehouse on the map.
"We're very proud of all of our student athletes that have come forward," Parker explained. "But if the next person that develops a cure for cancer comes from Whitehouse, Texas, don't be surprised."
In the last few weeks, after the Mahomes' Kansas City Chiefs won the AFC Championship, businesses along Highway 110 decked out window displays in support of Mahomes and his team. His success as one of the most prominent quarterbacks in the NFL is turning parts of East Texas from Dallas blue to Kansas City red.
"Patrick is so exciting to watch, and the Chiefs really came along," Weckman said. "[Their] defense and they're just fun to watch. And the Cowboys haven't done so great lately, so."
On Tuesday, Whitehouse officially proclaimed Feb. 2 as Patrick Mahomes Day.
"We have declared Feb. 2 Patrick Mahomes Day and I'm issuing a proclamation to that effect," Parker said.
As Mahomes prepares to compete in his first professional championship game, Whitehouse residents are standing firmly behind their own.
"We're just so proud of him," Weckman said. "Proud of the man he is and the team leader he is, and we're so thrilled to see him go all the way to the Super Bowl."
