WHERE ARE THEY NOW? Longview native Haynes King making a name for himself at Georgia Tech

Haynes King led the Yellowjackets to another upset over a top ranked team. They took down undefeated, No. 4 Miami 28-23.

ATLANTA — Haynes King has made a name for himself since stepping on Georgia Tech's campus.

In his first year, he threw for over 2,800 yards, and 27 touchdowns and rushing for 737 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was one of only two Power Five players with those stats, joining Heisman Trophy winner, Jayden Daniels.

The Yellowjackets opened their season in Dublin, Ireland against a top-ranked Florida State team. They secured the win 24-21, and most recently upset undefeated No. 4 Miami 28-23.

Haynes' dad, and head coach of the Longview Lobos, John King travels to nearly every game, and was there to celebrate Saturday's victory.

"When everybody rushed the field, he did it the smart way. He went to the entrance to our locker room because he knew I was coming that way.,” the quarterback said. “He was waiting for me to get back, and he gave me a big hug and smile, and he was happy for me.”

King has coached the Georgia Tech player from the time he started playing football, until he signed to college. That being said, it hasn’t been hard for him to put on his dad hat at the games, and not the coaching one, but what has been difficult for him is listening to the spectators talk about his son.

"In high school, he and I were on the field together and, all the chirping in the stands I didn't hear it,” King said. “ Now you, you sit around it, you kind of just, you have to grin and bear it. Sometimes it's never good enough. Quarterbacks get too much credit, and too much blame, but that's a part of the territory. He knew that when he signed up to play quarterback.”

King has admitted to taking mental notes of some of the plays they run in college to help him coach the Lobos. He also gets confirmation that he’s running his program to be an advanced team.

They’re once again bowl eligible and that’s what Haynes is focused on.

“Win out,” the Yellowjacket said. “That’s one of the main things I want to do and leave on a winning season and go win the bowl game as well and make the best out of every opportunity that I get.”
