NACOGDOCHES, Texas — One of the biggest rivalry trophies in college football has been replaced, by an equally big trophy.
Rivals Stephen F. Austin State University and Northwestern State will no longer battle for "Chief Caddo," the wooden trophy formerly given to the winner of the game. Instead, they will play for another 7-foot 6-inch tall trophy. The new prize's name will carry a lot of weight once it gets a title, about 320 pounds of weight.
The design for the piece features symbolism for both teams, with hints of a pine-tree feel to it. The trophy was carved by Texas based Della Meredith, who added scores from past games along the length of the trophy.
Both universities have reached out to the Caddo Nation for input on adding a piece designed by the nation to the trophy.
"While the name and the design of the trophy will change, the great tradition endures," Northwestern State University President James T. Genovese said. "We have a wonderful relationship and a strong rivalry with our good friends at SFA, and this simply opens a new and exciting chapter to be enjoyed for generations to come."
The new trophy comes just in time for the rivalry game coming Saturday, Oct. 5. The game marks a century after the first meeting of the two teams in 1924.
