CARTHAGE, Texas — Carthage quarterback Jett Surratt had a season high in the Bulldogs 45-14 win over Chapel Hill.
Surratt dealt with injury early in the season when he injured his ankle in the pre-game of the Kilgore match up. He twisted his ankle when he came down from a chest bump with his teammate, but decided to still play through the pain. Carthage fell to Kilgore 20-15.
"I twisted it real bad and I heard it pop. I thought it was broken at first, but I just tried to toughen up and play for my team," said Surratt. "I didn't play very well, but I tried to do it for them."
Surratt is now nearly 100 percent healthy and Carthage hasn't lost since week 1.
The quarterback is coached by his dad, the head coach of Carthage, Scott Surratt. While some kids want to separate from their parents in high school, the junior enjoys being around his dad because they connect on a football level.
"He never shuts off, it's always football no matter what," said Jett. "But honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. I love to talk about it, and get better and listen to him and improve my game."
The duo agrees that the star quarterback plays a lot like Drew Brees in his prime.
"He's more of a pocket passer, doesn't rely on his feet. Just tries to read it out, and if anything, get down and straight down," said the Carthage coach. " He has the same kind of size and they are able to read the defense so fast, process everything, and that's his specialty."
