New Diana Eagles soar into week three undefeated

The Eagles have become the team to beat in the 3A/2A/TAPPS division.

DIANA, Texas — New Diana started this season number 12 in the Beast Texas Fab 15 rankings. After a big win in week one 68-17 over Mount Vernon, they turned around and did it again in week two beating Gladewater 56-14. Now, they've climbed in the rankings to number five.

The Eagles have become the team to beat in the 3A/2A/TAPPS division. However, they've had a hot start to their season before, like last year when they started with a five-game winning streak.

"This season they have multiple returners on offense and defense. I've got 18 seniors this year, that's a difference that we haven't had," said Head Coach Jason Pitts. "I've had these guys for three years now and they want to go out there, and they want to put a good product on the field too."

The Eagles started this season playing against very competitive teams. Gladewater was number 12 when they played them, but they were able to pull out a win on the backs of multiple playmakers. Quarterback Dejaun Johnson connected with brother Jaidyn Johnson, and Tavarus Williams and Dayvon Mapps.

Now, they'll have to deal with 6'5" quarterback Colt Sparks from Sabine known for running the ball effectively and passing just as good. Sparks is committed to Texas Tech to play tight end so he'll be a tough player to stop.

"He can run, he can throw obviously, he's pretty good since he's going to Texas play tight end.  I've watched him for a few years and we're going to have to be able to stop the run and the pass," Pitts said. "I know they're going be ready, because they're well coached. I've known Coach Gilbert since he got the job, so we have to match that and and just be on the attack.

Sabine will travel to New Diana to face-off Friday at 7 p.m.
