Luka Doncic breaks Mavericks franchise single season scoring record

The record was set in 1983-84 by Mark Aguirre, the Mavs' No. 1 overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — No Dallas Mavericks record is safe while Luka Doncic is on the hardwood.

The standout shattered a significant franchise record for most points scored in a single season, further solidifying his already impressive NBA legacy.

Going into Tuesday night's game against the Charlotte Hornets, Doncic was only 29 points away from surpassing Mark Aguirre's single-season scoring record, which stood at 2,330 points. Aguirre was the Mavs' No. 1 overall pick in the 1981 NBA Draft and third all-time leading scorer in franchise history. In the 1983-83 season, he scored 2,330 points in 79 games played.

By the start of the third quarter on Tuesday, however, franchise history was eclipsed when Doncic made the Mavs' single-season record his own.

Doncic leads the NBA with an astounding average of 33.9 points per game this season.

Doncic has already established himself as one of the most talented and dominant offensive players in the game’s history. While Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki holds numerous franchise records, Doncic is quickly closing the gap. In the January 27 game against the Atlanta Hawks, Donicic broke the single-game scoring record in franchise history with 73 points. He also leads the Mavericks in triple-doubles by a wide margin (75). His coach, Jason Kidd, is closest with 21.

Under coach Jason Kidd, the Mavericks have emerged as a formidable team turning them into one of the best teams in the league at the moment. Doncic’s synergy with teammate Kyrie Irving has been particularly noteworthy, making them a daunting duo in a playoff series.
