UNDER THE LIGHTS: New faces hope to lead Whitehouse Wildcats to successful season

WHITEHOUSE, Texas — High school football is underway and today, we ventured out to the home of Patrick Mahomes and the Whitehouse Wildcats.

The Wildcats went 7-4 in 2023, finishing third in district play.

But, it's a new year and the Wildcats are ready to break their 11-game "curse."

"We're trying to get over that hump, the last two years we've played 11 ball games and we got beat on that 11th ball game in the playoffs," said Coach Kyle Westerberg. "This year, goal wise, we're trying to win that first playoff game and set us up in through that district, in that position as much as possible. To have that opportunity to win that first playoff game and see where it goes from there."

The team was senior heavy last year. So there's a lot of new faces this season. The up and coming seniors are prepared to lead the under classmen on the field.

"When I came in as a younger person, I thought we're supposed to have fun in football, and while it is fun, it's also really competitive, " said senior safety Julius Simms. "I think they're just think it's a little bit more on the fun side, not trying to win and, like not trying to get the job done. So I think I can share my wisdom with them a little bit and pick them up a little bit as being a leader, and I think we'll be fine from there."
