Tyler Junior College names sixth athletic director in school history

Former TJC head baseball coach Doug Wren takes over after a highly successful coaching tenure.

TYLER, Texas — Tyler Junior College has had a long history of success in their athletic department. In nearly 100 years, they have just shy of 70 total national championships with only five total athletic directors.

On Monday afternoon, TJC officially announced the sixth athletic director in school history. Former Apache head baseball coach Doug Wren was officially introduced in an on-campus ceremony and will take over the prestigious position, something he describes an incredible honor.

"I'm super humbled. With that list of athletic directors before me, I stand on the shoulders of giants," Wren said. "I'm excited for the opportunity to respect what they've done and to continue their legacy by continuing to push this athletic department forward."

Wren is certainly no stranger to Apache athletics, having served as the head baseball coach since 2009, he's brought a ton of accomplishments to Tyler. Wren led the Apaches to five national championships during his time at the helm, gathering five National Coach of the Year awards as well.

Wren was also awarded the prestigious Jerry Kindall Character in Coaching Award in 2023, given to the college or high school baseball coach who best exemplifies the Christian principles of character, integrity, excellence, teamwork, and service.

Now, Wren will move on to his new title, with an opportunity to oversee all athletics and to continue the success of TJC.

"This is a special place, it truly is. I couldn't think of a better way to continue the legacy here at TJC to hopefully have a greater impact on this campus and this community," Wren said. "I couldn't be more excited for the future for not only my family, but ultimately this athletic department and this institution."
