Spring Hill baseball headed to state tournament for first time in school history

The Panthers defeated defending state champion China Spring on Friday to sweep the region III championship series.

TYLER, Texas — For the first time in school history, the Spring Hill Panthers are headed to the baseball state tournament.

The Panthers defeated defending state champion China Spring 4-2 on Friday to sweep the region III championship series.

Panther head coach Garrett Methvin, a Spring Hill graduate, said this achievement is special.

"It's not about me, but I'm happy to be here" Coach Methvin said. "It's awesome to come back and coach at the school you graduated from and even more special to be able to go this far with them and get over that hump that Spring Hill has been trying to get to for so long. But it's about these guys."

During the postseason the Panthers are 10-1 and have outscored their opponents by a 47-7 margin.

With the playoff success Coach Methvin's message is simple: don't change anything.

"Keep doing what we've been doing. Keep having fun playing the game they've played since they were five years old and show up warm up right do the little things right," Coach Methvin said. "Keep consistent with everything we've been doing. It's just a different field in a different location."

Spring Hill (30-10-1) will meet Corpus Christi Calallen (36-9) in the Class 4A semifinals at 1 p.m. at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on the campus of The University of Texas.

The winner advances to the state championship game on Thursday June 6, at 6 p.m.
