Martin's Mill Lady Mustangs looking to repeat as 2A state champs

The Lady Mustangs started week two workouts with high hopes for the season.

VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — The Martin's Mill Lady Mustangs are coming into the 2024-25 season with high hopes and even higher standards.

This past spring, the Lady Mustangs took home the 2A girls' basketball state title over Nocona thanks to a buzzer-beater by then-freshman Kara Nixon. And this year, they expect nothing les.

"There's definitely going to be more pressure probably on our team this year, coming off the state championship, " said head coach Jay Bruce.

Bruce also says the team will focus more on defense and getting stronger in the weight room.

Martin's Mill has much talent returning, like Nixon and senior Ruthie Mein, who've been named team captains this year.

The ladies are excited for the season ahead, but feel the pressure champions normally do.

"It's kind of hard to keep that expectation from everyone, like you're going to have to come back and do something better," said Nixon. "But I feel like I have a great team, and they don't put that pressure on me."

Martin's Mill will take on Brook Hill in their season-opener on Nov. 2.
