SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State head football coach GJ Kinne has been ranked the number one coach in the Sun Belt conference.
Kinne, a former Canton and Gilmer quarterback, led Texas State to a FBS program record eight wins, claimed the first bowl victory in school history and upset Baylor.
Both College Football News and Athlon Sports ranked Kinne as the top coach in the conference.
According to College Football News, "Kinne's impact on the offense translated to an average of 36.7 points a game - the highest mark for the program since moving to the FBS level in '12."
Prior to being named the head coach at Texas State, Kinne lead Incarnate Word to a Southland Conference championship, No. 7 ranking, and reached the FCS playoffs semifinals game.
According to the Texas State website, "Kinne has coached at both the collegiate and NFL levels, starting as a graduate assistant at SMU in 2017 to an offensive assistant with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2019 to his head coaching roles."
Kinne was a standout player at both Canton and Gilmer high school. He led Canton to a playoff win in 2004, their first in forty years, and was a 3A All-State honorable mention selection.
Texas State starts the 2024 season vs Lamar on August 31, 2024.
