TYLER, Texas — Tyler Legacy's Maddry East is headed to her second UIL Cross Country State Championship competition.
Last year, as a freshman she qualified for state for the first time in Tyler Legacy history since 2014. This season, she's back again and she has her mind on beating her time from last year and placing in the top 75.
East has been focusing on her speed training this year and she has an advantage since she's been to this course. So she's feeling confident in her abilities.
"I wanted to make it to state again, because if I could do it as a freshman, I was hoping I could do it as a sophomore too," East said. "Last year I ran 19:11 so hopefully I can go faster than that."
She'll be the only runner representing the Red Raiders and she's scheduled to compete at 10:45 a.m. on Friday.
This is Amy Vazquez's first time qualifying for state. She ran 19:13 at regionals to make it, and will be the only Tyler High runner to represent the Lions.
Vazquez is only a sophomore. So she's nervous but excited to have made it this far. She didn't qualify last season. So she made the proper adjustments to ensure she does this season.
"Being more committed to running and just fixing things in my life for it, like having better eating habits, sleeping schedule," Vazquez said. "It's nerve wracking, but also exciting, because I get to go and represent my school. And it was also a big goal of mine and my biggest accomplishments ever."
Vazquez will hit the course Saturday at 10:45 a.m.
The UIL Cross Country State Championship will be at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
