UNDER THE LIGHTS: Troup Tigers looking to run the table in 2024

Troup ended last season with a 9-2 record.

TROUP, Texas — The Troup Tigers put up big numbers in 2023. Now, they're looking for even more success.

The Tigers finished last season with a 9-2 record, with their only losses coming to West Rusk (13-9) and New Boston (59-43).

Troup is looking to keep the momentum going and prove why they're one of the best teams in 3A, despite losing their starting quarterback, Grayson Hearon, to McMurry State.

The battle for the head signal-caller is now between sophomore Joshua Childress and senior Bryce Wallum. Coach Sam Wells thinks it's even right now, and he will take his time making a decision.

"They're both good athletes," Coach Wells said. "It's about who grasps the offense the best. Completion percentage is a big deal. Protecting the football is always a big deal. So that's just a few of the things that we look for."

Speaking on the rivalry between Troup and Arp, Coach Wells says the teams get along 364 days out of the year.

"And then we play the game and get after each other," Coach Wells said. "And then after the game, we're all friends again. It's a fun game," Wells said. "It's a packed stadium every time we play them, no matter what sport. So it's a good time."

The Tigers will kick off their season on Friday, Aug. 30, at home against Shelbyville.
