GLADEWATER, Texas — The Sabine Cardinals have had a rocky start to their season.
They started 2-0, looking very promising being led by star quarterback and Texas Tech commit Colt Sparks. However, in week three, Sparks went down in the third quarter with an injury that led to him being carted off the field and the game being called.
Since losing Sparks, who'll be out the rest of the season, the Cardinals have dropped their last two games. In week four, they fell to Arp 46-20, and most recently, were shut out by Tatum, 63-0.
Freshman quarterback Griffin DeHoyos has now been tasked to fill the shoes of Sparks.
"Colt's been great, he's in good spirits, but heartbroken, as you'd expect, about losing his senior season," said Sabine Head Coach Cody Gilbert. "He's done a lot for our community and for our program, so he's dealing with that, but he's got a future in football."
DeHoyos is finding his footing since the sudden quarterback switch. He's only thrown for one touchdown so far, but there's a long season ahead and plenty of room to develop.
"We've had a freshman quarterback step up in recent weeks and get some playing time, and he's done a great job of managing our offense, and we've had some other kids that we put back there to take snaps who have done a good job," said Gilbert. "I think the biggest thing to it is, when you experience an injury like that, you're trying to find certain groups to rally around. And I think for us, it has to be our offensive line, our tailbacks, and then we've got to play good defense."
Sabine will host Gladewater Friday at 7 p.m.
