KYTX — Allen Wilson will forever be remembered as one of great coaches in Tyler history.

Born in Midland, Wilson began his coaching career with Paris High School where he won the 1988 state championship.

Two years later, Wilson took over as head coach of the John Tyler Lions.

In 1994, the Lions capped a perfect 16-0 record with a state title. Wilson's Lions appear in several more playoff games with another state finals appearance in 2000.

After 11 seasons with the Lions, Wilson compiled a 102-34-2 record. Under his leadership, John Tyler won three district championships.

Perhaps his most famous game was a 1994 thriller against Plano East in the state semifinal game. Allen's Lions were up 41-17 late in the 4th quarter. But after one of the most remarkable comebacks in recorded football history, Plano East came back and took a 44-41 lead with 24 seconds remaining.

However, the Lions returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown for their own improbable comeback.

After the 2001 season, Wilson moved to Dallas Carter where he finished with a record of 44-5.

After nearly three decades, Wilson finished his career with a record of 246-90-4.

Perhaps Wilson is best known for the legendary "Cujo" jerseys. Worn during the playoffs, the "Cujo" jerseys were meant to develop the team's playoff persona. It was both feared and revered on the gridiron throughout Texas.

Wilson is a member of the Tyler ISD Athletic Hall of Fame and the Texas High School Coaches Association Hall of Honor.
