'It's a special day' | Former Gilmer Buckeyes head coach Jeff Traylor roots on hometown at state championship

Traylor won three state titles while coaching the Buckeyes. On Friday, he watched them win another as a loyal fan.

SAN ANTONIO — The three-time state champion head coach for Gilmer, Jeff Traylor, watched in a different capacity as the Buckeyes won their fourth title – and first without Traylor at the helm – on Friday night at the AT&T Center.

Traylor, now a Gilmer fan and head coach for the UTSA Roadrunners, was on the sidelines as his hometown team sealed the victory. He couldn't hide his excitement for not only the players, but also his former staff and family members who are part of the legacy he has left on this East Texas powerhouse.

"It's so surreal. We're such a small town and all those guys are my former assistances, they're all my former players. I've got a nephew coaching, I've got a cousin coaching," Traylor said. "It's a special day."

Traylor, a good friend of Smithson Valley head coach Larry Hill, said he believes in the Rangers' ability to take down the heavy favorites Aledo in their state championship matchup; the Bearcats hold the record for most state titles in all of Texas, while Smithson Valley is searching for its first.

"I texted Larry, 'Aledo has got talent that is unlike many schools in the state.' But Larry is as good a coach as there is in the business," said Traylor. "If any team has a chance to figure out a way and find a way, Larry Hill will find a way."

When asked about his current team's next matchup in Tuesday's Frisco Bowl, Traylor made it clear the 'Runners will be ready. For now, though, he's focused on cheering on the local Smithson Valley Rangers and his good friend Larry Hill.

"They're at the hotel right now about to have a team meeting, obviously I won't be there to run it. I'm going to stay here and cheer on my man Larry Hill and Smithson Valley!" said Traylor.

The Roadrunners take on Marshall in the Frisco Bowl on Tuesday, Dec. 19 at 8 p.m. in Toyota Stadium.
