TYLER, Texas — There's only one Tyler team still playing in the playoffs, and it’s not one of the usual suspects.
In fact, its a school that's never played this deep before, the All Saints Trojans.
This is the same Trojans that have won just three games in the last three years. They’d be the first to say the team has always been just flat out bad.
“People used to be like, how much trouble lose by this week," player Jackson Daniels said.
The losing is now a thing of the past. Head Coach Kyle Freeman was brought in this season to turn this team around, and he's led them to their best season in half a decade.
“We were just looking to get better and what we try to do is just bring some good, hard, hard nose principles of football into All Saints,” Freeman said.
Now the first time ever, All Saints has a playoff victory.
“I didn't think we could, like, grow this much in such little time, seeing from three years of 1-8 and being terrible to this, being a playoff contender," Daniels said.
It seems no matter how many games these Trojans win, nobody seems to believe they’re a winning team, but they're OK with that.
“Every single game this year, we've been an underdog. Somewhere between five points and 40 points underdogs," Freeman said. "So it's getting kind of a running joke this year about how much are we supposed to get beat by this this week?"
Now they’re about to travel four hours to one of the oldest stadiums in Texas for their first ever round two of the playoffs.
"I talked to talk to the kids, and it's like eating, you got to stay hungry and you can't be looking to push yourself away from the table right now,” Freeman said. "We're the most successful football team All Saints has ever had. That's not our goal. Our goal is to keep getting better every week and win every week.”
All Saints will face off against Lubbock Christian School on Friday at 6 p.m.
