VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — Martin's Mill produces unbelievable talent year after year.
Senior Kate Lindsey scored 51 points and was 15 of 29 from the 3-point range, according to the Tyler Morning Telegraph.
The National Federation of State High School Association says Lindsey's 15 3-pointers scored is a state record. Lindsey was not focused on the record, but knew something big was coming when her teammates kept feeding her the ball.
The game against Cayuga was senior night, and Lindsey is the only senior on the team. So her coaches and teammates made it a mission to help her reach a career high.
"Well it was her senior night and we wanted her to go out with a bang," said teammate Ruthie Mein. "We have always known she's a shooter so we usually do look for her in big games but it was an extra special night."
Lindsey doesn't focus on the stats going into each game, and she plays like she wants to see her teammates reaching career highs also.
"Kate's unselfish, she's the kid what makes the extra pass and gives up the shot for somebody else," Coach Jay Bruce said. "We thought how many can we get her tonight."
Lindsey didn't fight the game plan but she was more than satisfied when she hit her career high in the first half.
"At halftime I was at 28 and I was like OK, this is enough, I'm good. I've already got my career high so I'm good," Lindsey said. "But they just kept getting the ball to me, and I just kept shooting."
Lindsey loves the records she secures, and the accomplishments but she ultimately is playing for a bigger purpose.
"I play for my brother," Lindsey said. "When he was 5, he got a pacemaker and it restricted some of his sports and he loves playing sports so I just do everything for him because he's been through so much."
The Lady Mustangs are on a 187 winning streak in the district, making it to state 16 out of 18 years. That being said, Lindsey doesn't feel the pressure of the legacy and just focuses on winning.
"I'm just trying to win every game," she said.
