VAN ZANDT COUNTY, Texas — The Martin's Mill girls basketball team is known in the 2A district for their dynamic playmakers. They've won district 186 times over the last 18 years.
Kara Nixon is a freshman Mustang and is already making a statement across East Texas. She averages 15 points per game, six assists and three rebounds. That being said, against Cayuga and Cross Roads she averaged 22 points and 10 assists.
Nixon has always had a love for basketball because of its competitive nature and team cohesion.
"Winning with a team is always better than winning with just yourself," Nixon said.
Her dad always helped and coached her to be a better baller. Nixon said she likes having a personal coach at home to push her to get better, along with having Coach Jay Bruce at Martin's Mill.
Nixon's style of play has been described as dependable, dynamic and powerful. However, Bruce described her as a "dog, when she flips the switch on, she's all in."
"She's going to be hype, and aggressive, so just all around a dog," Bruce added.
Nixon is close with her teammate Mckenna Wise and they enjoy encouraging each other to be better.
"She knows how to see the floor really well and she can drive in," Wise said. "If she sees that we're down (in points) she can just make a play happen."
