LONGVIEW, Texas — Longview Police shot and killed 18-year-old Detravian Allison Wednesday after officers say Allison pulled a gun out. However, Allison's family disputes the police department's narrative.
According to the Longview Police, officers responded to Longview Square Apartments after getting reports of a stolen vehicle was parked in the lot. When police arrived, Allison allegedly raised a handgun at officers who fired at the him. Allison died later at a hospital.
As with any officer-involved shooting, the officers involved in the incident are on paid administrative leave while the Texas Rangers investigate.
However, Kevin Garner Sr., who is representing the family, says the family does not accept the police department's timeline of the events.
Police say the vehicle that was reported stolen was taken during an aggravated robbery on August 2.
Garner does not deny the vehicle was indeed stolen but says Allison may not have known he was in a stolen vehicle.
"It wasn't for sure that he knew that the vehicle was a stolen vehicle that he was in, he was sort of just tagging along, perhaps with the wrong crowd," Garner explained.
Garner says he talked to residents at Longview Square Apartments following the shooting to gather their get their versions of the shooting.
"There were a few actual eyewitnesses who saw pretty much the bulk of what took place," Garner said. "I found some of the information conflicting with what the Longview PD had to say regarding the shooting."
Allison's family says Detravian did not have a criminal record either in the juvenile or adult court system.
Detravian Allison,18, was about to start his senior year of high school.
"She (Allison's mom) doesn't feel he was the type of young man that would do the alleged things that the Longview Police Department are suggesting," Garner said.
Garner says the family are planning a candlelight vigil for Allison. About 1,000 of his classmates signed up to attend the event.
