Rusk County District Attorney Michael Jimerson is recovering after more than three hours of brain surgery Wednesday to reduce swelling.

Jimerson's wife Mona told the Tyler Morning Telegraph this morning her husband is alert and is communicating with visitors in his Mother Frances ICU room.

Jimerson, who was elected to office five years ago, was taken to the hospital in Henderson following days of suffering from a severe headache.

Mrs. Jimerson said her husband went to a doctor Tuesday and was given a shot, but the pain did not subside.

She then took her husband to the hospital where doctors conducted CAT scans and an MRI.

Mrs. Jimerson said doctors told her that her husband had a cyst on his brain which was causing him to retain fluid.

"He was in surgery more than three hours yesterday, but he is making a good recovery. He can talk and he has had none of the side effects, such as memory loss, the doctors had said could happen," she said.

Jimerson recently obtained a death sentence against Blaine Milam for the brutal beating, biting death of 13-month-old Amora Carson.

He has also assisted the Texas Attorney General's Office in prosecuting two Tyler cousins for the 1983 Kentucky Fried Chicken murders, which occurred in Kilgore.

Jimerson was awarded the 2007 Dale Geddie Award for his investigation into corruption in the Rusk County Sheriff's Office involving civil rights violation against inmates.

Mrs. Jimerson said she is thankful for all of the prayers and support she has received from the community.

William Brown, the Rusk County DA investigator, said Jimerson reported suffering from a severe headache late Tuesday night and was taken to Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler.

After a series of CAT scans, doctors elected to perform surgery Wednesday afternoon, during which time they discovered at least one lesion on Jimerson's brain, Brown said.

A 1993 graduate of Baylor University Law School and one-time general, civil and personal injury lawyer, Jimerson was elected Rusk County district attorney in November 2004.

That same year, he received the John R. Alford Outstanding Young Man award from the Henderson Area Chamber of Commerce for outstanding community involvement.
