HUGHES SPRINGS (KYTX) - A follow up tonight on the Hughes Springs murder suicide. We're learning more about the estranged couple found dead Monday night. As CBS 19's Abby Broyles explains, a pending divorce could have been the motive.
Friends have set up a makeshift memorial in front of the home of 53-year old Kandi Nolan. The Hughes Springs Police Department says she was killed in her home Monday night by her estranged husband, 53-year old Stan Nolan.
Police got a frantic call from Kandi moments before she was killed.
"We received a call around 6:00 Monday saying her husband was breaking into the house, she needed help immediately, she was afraid he was going to kill her, at which point the line went dead," Hughes Springs Police Chief Randy Kennedy.
When police got to the home, they found the bodies of Stan and kandi in the kitchen.
"She'd received a gun shot wound to the left side of the head, and he had turned the gun on himself and shot himself in the head," Chief Kennedy said.
The Nolans were married for 17 years, but neighbors say they've been separated for months. Early yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Nolan filed for divorce.
Neighbors like Huey Byrd say Mr. Nolan was trying to reconcile. Byrd lives next door and says Mr. Nolan used to come by often.
"I just talked to him a couple weeks ago when he was out there cutting the grass," Byrd says. "He was trying to get back together when I talked to him, and I saw him after that, cutting grass again."
Byrd says it's hard to believe the Nolans' troubled marriage would lead to murder.
"You never can tell," Byrd says. "It happens everyday, I just never thought it'd happen this close."
Police say the couple did not have a history of domestic violence. They are waiting for the toxicology report. Funeral arrangements are pending.
