TYLER (KYTX) – The Tyler Metropolitan Planning Organization held an open house Thursday evening to gather input on a plan to build 4.2 miles of hiking and biking path called the Legacy Trail.

The MPO won $3.5 million dollar federal grant, but must gather public input as part of the process to receive the funds.

“This gives us the opportunity to expand Tyler's already large network, and gives a way to connect with the routes that we have right now,” said Michael Howell, principal planner for the City of Tyler and MPO Coordinator.

The trail will run in an area from Three Lakes Parkway in South Tyler to Gresham parallel to Old Jacksonville Highway. The paths will be similar in style to the popular Rose Rudman Trail.

"The corridor continues to grow that we can try to look at so many different ways of trying to address the different types of transportation along the corridor and try to hopefully give the best improvement,” Howell said.

Those who attended the open house said they were pleased about the plans.

“I'm a runner, I'm a triathlete,” said Summer Tillson. “Anything that was going to benefit my training and the teammates I train with, I was interested in learning about."

The federal grant will cover about 80% of the cost of the project, and the City of Tyler will also kick in more than $2 million to help complete the project.
