TROUP, Texas — Sitting ringside as boxer Nonito Donaire secured a knockout victory against Stephon Young last month in the World Boxing Super Series’ bantamweight tournament in Lafayette, Louisiana, Shawn Vascocu’s admiration for the fighter reached a fever pitch.
For years, local boxing coach Vascocu, 43, of Bullard, has enjoyed watching Donaire’s strength, grit and perseverance in the ring.
“He’s always fought whoever was there for him to fight and he has a lot of power,” Vascocu said of Donaire. “I like people with power who will fight, and he’s really strong for his size.”
