SHERIFF: Known gang member arrested after SWAT standoff in Smith County

SMITH COUNTY, Texas — A Smith County man is behind bars following a Thursday afternoon SWAT standoff.

According to the Smith County Sheriff's Office, the SWAT team, officials from the Criminal Investigation division and patrol divisions arrested 40-year-old Kevin Smith in the 12100 block of County Road 1113, around 11:15 a.m., following a reported domestic disturbance that occurred on Wednesday.

Smith was arrested for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon-family violence.

In a press release, officials said Smith is a documented gang member "with a lengthy, violent criminal history."

Sheriff Larry Smith said due to the suspect's history and potential for violence, the SWAT team was assembled and utilized for the warrant execution.

Smith was quickly arrested without incident and was booked into the Smith County Jail on $1.5 million bond.
