NACOGDOCHES, Texas — A second protest was held in Nacogdoches Tuesday following word that more charges are expected to be filed against a third woman after an incident back in April.
Multiple videos from April 10 have gone viral showing physical altercations involving an off-duty Nacogdoches police officer and female students, who attend Stephen F. Austin State University.
Mid-April, a protest was held starting at Griffith Hall and ending at the Nacogdoches police department.
According to attorney Kim T. Cole who spoke with the Nacogdoches police department, Shannon Williams will soon be facing charges.
This protest took them from Griffith Hall to City Hall where community members signed up to speak during the community forum.
"Officers take an oath to serve and protect the community. These young ladies are members of the Nacogdoches community," Kim Cole said.
"I am gravely concerned about the incident of police violence that took place at the verge several weeks ago," an SFA professor said. "I'm here to speak up. When we feel our students have been treated unjustly or have been harmed physically, emotionally, psychologically by our justice system, or by our community."
The group was hoping the city council would speak out against the officer involved or at least address the issue with the police chief. However, they were not given the reaction they were hoping for.
One student was very passionate in her response to the council's reaction, "For me to sit in there and look at all of those people, they look like they didn't care. Nobody deserves to go through that, but they don't care because we're black." she cried.
Another student believes this is not the end.
"It's gonna happen somewhere else, I just thank God that it didn't end up with a bullet because that's how it normally ends," he said. "So remember this, all students even if this happened to a white or an Asian or an Indian student at SFA, you're supposed to stop what you're doing and you're supposed to come help."
The group says this is not the last time the city will hear from them.
"This is far from over," Cole said, "You saw the looks on their faces in there. They justified in standing behind this officer assaulting these girls and charging them with their own assault."
Cole says these charges not only need to drop against the women, but the officer should also face charges.
"He needs to be gone," Cole said. "He does not need to be on the force and he also needs to be charged with a crime."
Nacogdoches police department has said they will not comment on an active investigation.
