Family thanks heroic sergeant for saving baby's life

“My daughters are my everything. They're my number one priority," Kayleigh Foley said.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A family is thankful a sergeant came to their rescue following a deadly crash earlier this month between a motorcycle and a car. The motorcyclist died on the scene, and the family in the car is still recovering at a St. Petersburg hospital.

Inside that car was a mom and her two young girls. Kayleigh Foley and 3-year-old Ariel are doing well but the youngest child, Lola, is in the ICU at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital.

Sergeant Dave Musgrove of the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office said the motorcyclist passed him going more than 100 mph during the evening of Feb. 8. Foley said she never saw the motorcycle.

“I remember the impact and everything — and I just heard my daughter Ariel screaming like bloody murder, and I remember honking the horn to let him know I’m here,” Foley said.

Musgrove gets Ariel out and flags down others to help. Lola is still in the car. Musgrove finds her unresponsive. He starts chest compressions, and a miracle happens.

“I just heard her breathe,” Musgrove said.

Lisa Foley, Kayleigh’s mother, said: “He will always be our hero. My entire family...we have undying gratitude to this man.”

Foley and Ariel only suffered minor injuries, but Lola is still in the hospital.

“We see promising signs, and we definitely have hope,” Lisa Foley said.

She said the overwhelming amount of support is helping their family through this difficult time.

“My daughters are my everything; they're my number one priority. That's just how us moms are,” Foley said.

Foley said Lola's recovery will take a lot of work and support; they've set up a GoFundMe for assistance.

The family said they've kept in touch with Musgrove since the crash. In fact, they said he stopped by Lola's hospital room to say hello to her and check in on them.
