Due to a recent case of rabies reported in Wood County, Sheriff Tom Castloo issued a public service announcement on May 8, 2017.
He asked residents to pay close attention to wild animals in their areas and contact the department if an animal is displaying symptoms.
Signs include an animal that appears confused or aggressive towards domestic animals or people. Symptoms range from fear of water, snapping and irritability to foaming at the mouth.
If you think that your animal is infected, contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. This disease is commonly found in wild animals because they are not vaccinated.
The Sheriff asked that owners make sure their animals are vaccinated.
