FORT WORTH (WFAA) - A Tarrant County Sheriff's Office van transporting inmates was involved in a three-vehicle crash in north Fort Worth Tuesday afternoon.
In all, four people, including two inmates, were seriously injured and nine others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
According to Fort Worth Fire Department officials at the scene, an SUV following the transport van failed to stop when it came upon traffic on the access road of Interstate 35W at about 1:30 p.m. The SUV slammed into the back of the van, injuring 10 on board.
Two inmates and two people inside the SUV were transported to Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital with serious injuries. The deputy who was driving the vehicle and seven other inmates suffered less serious injuries and were taken to John Peter Smith Hospital.
Two others inside the third involved car were examined at the scene and left on their own.
First responders at the scene used heavy equipment to cut open the inner cage of the van to free the last remaining inmates from the crash.
In all, seven ambulances responded to the scene.
